What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
Sleep Apnea is a common but serious sleep disorder where breathing is briefly interrupted during sleep. The most common type of Sleep Apnea – Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) – occurs when the airway is blocked by relaxed soft tissue during sleep causing pauses in breathing and loud snoring. One suffering from OSA may stop breathing hundreds of times per night from anywhere from a few seconds to more than a minute. These pauses result in reduced oxygen levels and disturbances in sleep.
People suffering from Sleep Apnea often experience the following symptoms:
- Restless Sleep and Snoring
- Early Morning Headache
- Excessive Daytime Fatigue
- Concentration and Memory Problems
- Mood Swings and Irritability
- Poor Work and Academic Performance
Left untreated, sleep apnea can have serious and life-shortening consequences:
- Heart Disease: including High Blood Pressure, Heart Arrhythmias and Heart Attack
- Weight Gain
- Motor Vehicle and Work Accidents
